Wednesday Sep 4, Beverley Beach State Park
We really
are just ambling down the coast, taking our time and stopping when we feel like
it. Aware that the temperatures when we get further south and head inland are
still going to be pretty warm for awhile so making the most of the coastal
climate.
The morning
was quite grey and it wasn’t until later this afternoon that the sun came out,
although no rain. First stop was at Barview at the mouth of Tillamook
Bay, a real fisherman’s place, spent some time watching them head
out to sea. Got a laugh when we spotted a chap sitting on a chair on the roof
of his camper….he was taking photos of his wife who was surfing on the beach.
We see
Tillamook cheese is in all the stores out west, and the factory in Tillamook is
open to the public. We stopped to check it out, although have to say Ian was
muttering that he had seen plenty of cheese made! It was quite interesting
watching the automated process of cutting and wrapping, all the actually cheese
making is done in huge automated vats.
Also in
Tillamook I had read about the Latimer Quilt & Textile Centre so popped
into see it. (www.latimerquiltandtextile.com) Set in an school building it is a place to
come and learn fiber art techniques such as spinning, weaving and patchwork.
About 8 floor looms were in one of the rooms, many with weaving in progress and
today I spoke with a lady who was weaving fine cotton to make tea towels. Reminded
me of the many hours I had spent on my loom on the farm.
From
Tillamook we left 101 and took the coastal route through Netarts, a really good
drive.
Arrived at
Beverley Beach about 4 and were lucky to get the last campsite available,
somehow didn’t expect the camps to still be so busy. Had a 10 minute walk back
through the camp to get to the beach, then had a good walk on the hard sand,
the tide was well out. Quite a nice beach but no real wow appeal.
Tonight for
dinner I cooked fresh salmon given to us by Jean at Chinook, it was just
superb.
