Wednesday August 10, Port Orford OR

Really liked this area and a good camp spot on the water, seemed like a good idea to stay on and have a catch up day. The blue skies continue with really pleasant temperatures. It is a very windy area and every afternoon the northerlies get up and blow right in.

I woke before seven this morning and could see they were lifting fishing boats into the water, quickly dressed and out with the camera. Quite fascinating how it is all done.

Just south of here we had passed a place called “Prehistoric Gardens” and outside there was a huge dinosaur. Knew grandson Aidan would be pretty impressed if we visited and took some photos. It really was amazing as they had made lifesize replicas of a number of dinosaurs and prehistoric animals and they were nestled in a little pocket of rain forest. It was extremely well done and gave the idea of the size of these creatures. So Aidan we have a lot of photos to show you when we get home.

Had lunch at Arizona Beach, but didn’t get out as the wind was really driving in. Back to Port Orford to have a look at a number of galleries in the small town, one in particular had some amazing work including some very big pieces. www.hawthornegallery.com

There are a number of brown pelicans around the wharf and spotted a few not far from where we are parked. They are such huge ungainly creatures and take a bit of getting out of the water, then they glide around and just plummet into the sea to catch fish in their huge bills. Also spotted some Turkey Vultures on the edge of the water. There have been grey whales in the area by the wharf in the last few days, have kept our eyes out for them but no luck.
