Tuesday August 23, Tucannon River RV Park, Near Dayton WA

Last night we met our neighbour, John Red Horse and had a long and very interesting chat. Really enjoyed his company and hearing about his culture. John who is a native Sioux from South Dakota is the Project Engineer for plumbing and air conditioning at the new Casino Hotel that is presently being built near the camp. The 200 room multi floor hotel was started last October and we were surprised to hear that hand over was September 2 and first guests were already booked for that night. As you can see from the photo it appears a long way from being finished, with windows on the upper floors yet to be installed, but John said that many rooms are already carpeted and furnished and he expects the target to be met….and guess it has to be!

It has been a good few days in Pendalton, this morning it was on the road again and north east to the Washington Border and Walla Walla. We weren’t far along the road before we came into a huge wheat growing area that was well into harvest, in fact not many areas yet to be done. Just love all the shapes and patterns that the crops and rolling hills bring, sorry though that the sky was cloudless….photographers need clouds!

Walla Walla is like an oasis in the valley, and following the growth of the wine industry in the region, the town has become much more upmarket with many of the wineries having bars and associated restaurants in the down town area. The streets are lined with trees, really enjoyed wandering around.

Bought a loaf of hand made sourdough bread and stopped for a lunch with fresh field tomatoes and camembert….the flavours were fabulous….guess a glass of wine with it would have been even better but a bit early in the day for that.

Continuing along HW 12 we were soon back into the wheat growing areas, where I was itching to take photos but the road was too busy. Found a back road and wound through some real rural areas and finally came across a place to stop where the harvesters were working. Watched for ages, Ian was most impressed watching how the harvesters could self level on quite steep hills….must admit that I didn’t really notice, but just enjoyed taking photos!

On our way to Palousse Falls when we came across this really nice campground with shade trees, big sites and nice green lawns…..and electricity and water for $16!! Unbelievable. (Also discovered a bit later that there was free high speed wifi!!!)

Very pleasant this evening sitting under the trees with a nice breeze blowing….and a beer. As Ian would say….It would be “Rude Not To”!
