Wednesday August 4, Squirrel Creek Camp, Ak

180 Miles

Finally I think we have fixed it…that is the leak. Ian and I spent ages this morning trying to isolate where it was coming in, I had the water in the kettle pouring in very localized spots and Ian was head down under the pedals seeing when it started dripping. Finally located a place where it came through, so that was a good start.
Saw a “Body Shop” as we were driving back into Palmer and it looked really neat and tidy so pulled in. What great guys, as soon as they heard of our predicament he said..”Can’t have that…we will get you right”, and that was what they did. They found a seam that had sprung way up between the firewall and the guard, so set to with a two pot sealer mix. After giving it time to set they poured a whole bucket of water over the cab and not a drop came in…we were ready for the road. But not quite. A front tyre had a slow leak and we were needing to put air into it every 3 of 4 days, so thought we should get that sorted as well. So by the time that was all dealt to, and we had refueled, filled the propane tank and emptied our other tanks it was after 3.

We headed east back over the Glen Highway, almost 3 weeks since we came over it on our way into Anchorage. The wind was blowing and there was light rain over the first 50 miles but by the time we got to the Matanuska Glacier it had cleared and a bit of sun was shining. It was good to get out and stretch the legs as we walked down through the aspens to the viewpoint, a great sight.
We drove on and decided not to stop at Copper River, looked a stunning river but will stay there on the way back up from Valdez, and hopefully get some salmon.
It was getting onto 8 when we set up camp at a nice little state camp. Had some of the halibut for tea, it is so good. We have really been spoilt with seafood lately, especially the great salmon we had last night.
