Sunday July 18th, Keith and Holly’s, Anchorage, AK

Woke to rain this morning, and it rained all day, just a light soft rain but enough to close in the visibility.

We sat around the table chatting over coffee this morning, Keith and Holly have given us some great “musts” to see on our trip down the Kenai Peninsula, we really appreciate local knowledge as to where the good places are to visit.

Decided to have a day looking around town, and first stop was at the biggest and best second hand book store we have ever seen. Exchanged some books from the van and restocked the shelves,

Then headed downtown and first stop was a weekend craft market, an interesting walk around but a lot of very touristy stalls. With umbrellas we set off for a good walk around the inner city and initially came across store up store selling the Chinese made Alaskan souvenirs. They were just full of tourists.

But we did find some great galleries and top quality local crafts, good to browse through. Called in to the Anchorage Museum which has recently been completely remodeled, quite a striking building. But had run out of time to take a good look through it.

Keith and Holly took us out to Potters Marsh, a great spot to check out the birds. We put our coats on and enjoyed a good walk. Saw our first bald eagle, quite low carrying a fish back to its nest high up in some distant trees.

But the real highlight was the young female moose grazing beside the parking lot. Keith drives a dual energy Prius, which runs on battery and can hardly be heard, so we were able to get really close for photos. Our best ever encounter with a moose.

Michael & Frannie has one of these Prius cars and we found the same thing on Sunday in the Royal National Park... well no moose but a wallaby didn't hear us!
Whereas the whales don't mind boat noise and just pop up alongside and look at us all and go back under!!

Hi Meg and Ian, delightful stories and pictures. You both look very happy in the pictures. All well here in Rotorua, Sam arrived back from his adventures having had a great time with his mates,he commented that Sth Africa wasn't as exotic as anticipated, perhaps they needed to spend more time out of the pubs. Lots of love Vicki and Ed
