Friday July 23, Homer Spit, AK

Well today has probably been the first day that we have stayed put and not done much at all. Woke this morning to a real gale blowing, so pulled the blankets up and read my book!
The sea is really rough and very few boats ventured out. Ian got hold of a charter guy in Ninilchik whom Keith had recommended and has booked a days fishing for halibut on Sunday. Just hope the weather improves. Today it has been about 13 degrees and a bitterly cold wind.
We jacketed up and pulled hats on late morning and walked along the spit to the boat harbour and checked out all the little tourist shops….seemed to be what everyone else was doing as most of the fish charters today were postponed.

One group had been out for a few hours and come back with some halibut, so watched them being filleted…the woman on the knife made the job look so simple. The smaller ones were about 20 – 30 lb and there was also one at 60lb. The record for these fish is over 300lb!
Had a very late lunch of halibut and chips and sat next to a couple from California. Yvonne and Phil have been on the road for about 3 months and were a mine of information about some of the great spots ahead of us.
It was late afternoon when we got back to the van, and quite happy to “chill out” for the rest of the day in the warmth.
