Saturday June 12th, Joanie and Jeff’s, Calgary, AB

0 Miles in Ruakiwi

Joanie’s birthday, and finally the weather that we had been waiting for, the sky was clear and crisp to start with but it just got warmer and warmer and by late afternoon it was 26 degrees…such a contrast in 48 hours.
Joanie wanted to take her sister and Ian and I out to what she thinks is one of the best country markets in Alberta…and Jeff thought that was a good idea so that he could get on and get the supplies in and food organized for the party!.
So mid morning we set off out to Millarville, about 45 minutes from town, a most spectacular drive on such a pretty morning, the Rockies in the distance with still quite a good covering of snow.
It was a great market with lots of local produce and craft type stalls – all local and really good quality. A very pleasant way to spend a warm Saturday morning.
We were all feeling ready for some brunch by midday and although there were many food stalls in the market, we stopped at a nearby little old café on the highway that Joanie recommended. We all had a “Scramber”..a bit like a frittata and really really good.
We gave the back yard a quick summer makeover, planting little flowering plants in pots and getting out all the chairs and table and by 5 it was looking like party central.
It was a great night, with over 50 family and friends celebrating…and everyone had heard about the Kiwis coming. Had so many interesting conversations with people who all had stories to tell about travels to Alaska and things we should see and do.
Jeff, as always cooked up great burgers on the barbecue. Used my little G10 today to take a few snaps, its ideal for these sort of occaisions.
