Wednesday August 12, Starvation State Park, Duchesne UT

A quieter start to the day, and wandered in to Moab and checked out the galleries and stores…and a good coffee, The heat was building again as we left town and headed north on the 191 for a drive through the desert. The scenery is huge and powerful but everything is so dry, no sign of life anywhere.

Green River’s claim to fame is their melons, and that seems to be about all, apart from food and fuel beside the I70, the rest of the town has died, we have never seen such a town on our travels. We stopped at a roadside stall selling melons, 7 different varieties, with samples of them all, obviously a popular stop as people were stopping the whole time we were there. Sitting behind the counter was Paula, a delightful lady well into her 70’s. Had a great chat with her, we heard that she used to be a hairdresser and she certainly had quite a style, she came from Illionois ever year to man the stand.

After passing through Price, we rose up to 9000 ft and through the Ashley Forest, where the air cooled down to 26 degrees. An interesting descent through the valley floor with arid cliffs around us.

Loved the name “Starvation” park, as the surrounding country is certainly that, but this park is on an oasis, a clear blue reservoir. Not many people here, a very pleasant spot.
