Friday July 17th Steinbach MB Canada

….yes we are in Manitoba, Canada!

At last we have sunshine this evening and Ian is outside cooking up spare ribs for tea. He has been eyeing them up in the fridge for days but the weather has not allowed him to spend an hour or more outside simmering them first, then grilling with the barbecue sauce. I have made a salad to go with them….real simple.

Last nights camp was one of the poorest we had been in, the only good part of the cold and raining evening was that Ian managed to find a program on the history of old American Barns on television. As we drive it is great seeing these old buildings kept in good order and often still being used.

Checked out International Falls on a drizzly morning, but not very interesting. There is a huge paper mill in town that seems to be the main industry, not sure where the falls were!

We followed what was listed as a scenic route west along the edge of the Rainy River which forms the border with Canada, but really only a bush lined roadway. After a lunch stop in Baudette on the Lake of the Woods we drove through to Warroad and the border crossing with Canada,

We crossed in and out of Canada twice last year, and after looking at our passports they waved us through. But not this time, a surly officer asked us to leave the van, open all the hatches and he inspected every cupboard inside and out…somehow we felt like crims, maybe it was Ian’s long hair that worried him!!

Once again, the drive through to Steinbach was straight, flat and mainly bush lined. Time to pack away our American dollars and visit a money machine for Canadian Dollars.

A bit lean on the photos today....
