Sunday September 28

September 28 Sunday, Lake Dunmore Waterhouses, Salisbury, VT ……again

We seemed doomed with tires….arrived back at Lake Dunmore this afternoon ready to go into Middlebury at 8 to have the brake pads done, and realised the front right tire was going down! At least we know where the compressor is and will pump it up and try and limp into town with it in the morning. Just can’t believe our bad luck with tires, but guess that if that is all we have had problems with after 10,000 miles we are lucky.
Today has been all I have ever expected of Vermont…and probably all my pictures will show it! With a bit of overnight rain, and some odd showers the colours seemed to have intensified. The colours are so intense and there seems nothing else but yellows, oranges and reds wherever you look…every corner is just a WOW!
Planned a route around that took us around some small country villages in Orange County, then back over the Green Mountains to Salisbury. Every small town seems to have a Country Store, it is amazing that they are still operating in this day and age. Seem to be open everyday for all hours and stock everything that anyone may want, and are usually very old. The towns that we went through were all established in the mid 1700’s something we find hard to comprehend.
Chelsea was our first stop, and was one of the bigger small towns we went through. We stopped in the local diner and got a coffee and bun to go. Climbed up through the hills through Vershire and Thetford. The area is mainly tree covered hills, houses dotted along the roads and occasional small cleared areas that are “farmed”!
Came across a covered bridge that had a 10’ 6” clearance and as we stopped to think about it, a local lady poked her head in the door and said..”are you Kiwi’s?” She had travelled in NZ in the 90’s and just loved it, and now was teaching English in a local high school, but has plans to return for a visit. She lived right beside the bridge and chuckled about our concern as the clearance was 12”!
We wound up and down the hills, the finally stopped at the country store in Sharon where we picked up some bread for lunch to go with the cheese in the fridge. Stopped beside the White River for lunch.
Then it was quite a steep trip over the Green Mountains, arriving back at the camp by four. Ray and Susan who were so good to us with our flat tire on Friday were still here and were most surprised to see us back. They ended up having a few drinks with us before heading south to their home in New Hampshire.
