July 20 Hoeft State Park, Rogers City MI

After quite a bit of driving yesterday, felt we would have a quieter day, so a leisurely start, and didn’t set off until 10.30.
The roads were quite a bit quieter, very easy driving. First stop was in the small town of Harrisville. Wandered through a gift/houseware store, and bought some local produce from a roadside stall. Found a coffee house for our first fix of the day, and took it with us as we wandered around a marina on the shores of Lake Huron. The boats were a reasonable size, and we got talking to a friendly guy, Steve, who was cleaning his boat. He was full of info about fishing on the lake, and ended up giving Ian a lure called “cow bells’…will be interesting to try it on Tarawera. The fish they catch are Steel heads, he felt that they were a rainbow trout, and they don’t get their rainbow colouring unless they get into the rivers.

Up the coast to Alpena for a lunch stop on the shores of the lake. It is quite a sizeable town, and there was a brown trout fishing contest, as well as an art festival, all in the downtown area, on the lake shore. The Arts festival was a bit tacky, but quite a bit of fun, but thoroughly enjoyed watching the fish being weighed in, and chatting with the fishermen. They were mainly walleye, a type of perch..
Onwards north to Rogers City and stopped at their marina…..were there also happened to be an Ice Cream stand…I had Cherry ice cream in a handmade waffle cone…and Ian had the chocolate…not a good day for the diets!
Camped at the Hoeft State Park on the shores of Lake Huron, about 5 miles north of Rogers City. Very much a family type camp, and our site was just over the dunes from the lake…the sand is very white, and soft, making for hard walking. Had a paddle, but pretty cold.
It’s been a night for firsts…had to put the awning out to cook tea as we had a bit of rain, and heaps of thunder. It was a piece of cake, and Ian was able to cook the spare ribs…they turned out really well. Decided to try out the shower in the van as well, as didn’t want to walk to the camp showers in the rain….and it is awesome…all set!
