July 24 Thursday - Municipal Campground, Thessalon

Finally we are in Canada. The weather dawned absolutely perfect, wandered along the rivers edge and got some early shots. On the road by 9.30, fueled up, and over the bridge to Canada. We had seen long queues on the bridge yesterday, waiting for customs, heard that it can take an hour to get through. So went prepared…but no problems, just drove straight in. They checked our passports and waved us through.

Called into the Welcome Centre and got maps and advice for our travels through Ontario, and got our first Canadian currency…in some ways, quite similar to NZ, with coloured notes, and Looney’s ( 1 dollar coins) and Tooney’s (2 dollar coins). The exchange rate is a little better than USA.

Got in supplies for 3 or 4 days, bought and external hard drive to store photos!, and sorted out a phone for Canada…then on our way East.

Quite different country, through hilly land covered in bush with rocky outcrops. Also some flat land, no animals, but all growing hay, and quite a bit being cropped.

Came into a smallish lakeside town, Thessalon, and spotted a camp right beside Lake Huron. It is a municipal camp, very clean facilities, with a site looking down the lake…all for $22.

Pulled in beside a couple from Southern Ontario, Mike and Eileen who had spent 6 weeks traveling in NZ last year.Spent a couple of hours chatting over some beers, getting great advice on traveling in Ontario
