October 2 Thursday, Hidden Valley Campground, Jamestown NY

Today I wore jeans and sneakers for the first time on our trip, the temperatures have really tumbled, but hopefully it is only temporarily. Our first visit today was to the Letchworth State Park, which we heard was rated as the “Grand Canyon of the East”. The 20 mile drive through the park follows the Genessee River, which tumbles over some great waterfalls in the Southern end. It was a really pleasant drive through a tree lined road, and the outlooks over the gorge were magnificent. Luckily the sun was shining, but the rest of the day we had rain off and on.
The road south from the park meandered through areas of farming and cropping and some small towns. Felt a bit hungry so when we spotted a little country restaurant in Houghton decided to try it out for lunch. We felt as though we had stepped back in time by 20 years, it was a typical country diner with locals enjoying chatting and having lunch. But it was really clean and the food was great. The homemade soup I had was real country style and good.
Continued south and then took the I86 east, heading for Jamestown, through lots of squally showers and wind. Stopped in town for supplies and a bit of shopping, then headed out to the campground.
We watched the Vice Presidential debate on TV tonight, it has been an interesting time travelling through the country at this time and hearing the opinions of many people. There seems to be a strong support for Obama.
