Sunday September 30, La Linea Marina

A pretty nice place to spend the weekend.

…and day two of our relaxing weekend, really enjoying it. Had thought about getting our bikes out and biking across to Gibraltar but thankfully we decided to walk. We joined quite a number walking across the border and there were queues of cars waiting to go through border control. Passports out but the officer really didn’t take much notice, just a cursory glance and we were through.
This is a really interesting road as it crosses the Gibraltar Airport runway, one of the few in the world. It is not a busy airport with less than ten plane movements a day, all from UK. Just as we were getting to the runway the red lights came, the barrier arms went up and police guards stood by and watched the traffic and pedestrians. Saw a British Airways plane leave the terminal and start taxiing down past us before turning around and coming back for take off. Seemed a bit surreal. Then once the barriers were up the traffic and pedestrians continue on their way.
We continued walking into Gibraltar, there were cars, motor scooters and pedestrians everywhere, through the narrow streets with lots of high rise buildings. And everywhere it looked grimy and dirty. We were not impressed. Wandered down to the marina area and sat and had a coffee but this town was not working for us. So we turned around, back through the border and into the old part of La Linea and found a good tapas bar and enjoyed a cold one and some tapas. We felt much more comfortable, this is real Spain.
For the first time in southern Spain there have been clouds in the sky and we even had some spits of rain, but it didn’t come to anything. Have been looking at maps and researching on google this afternoon as to where we are going to head tomorrow. Ronda has been recommended and it looks a great place, so that is tomorrow’s destination and after that hopefully will get some cycling in on a rail trail. There have been none through Portugal and not many places in Spain, it is something we have really missed.
Heading for the border.

A plane was coming!
