Tuesday July 24, Lac de Nantua, French Alps

Beside our campsite

It has been a day of mooching around and sightseeing with the navigator getting into a bit of strife a few times, not quite reading Jilly’s directions correctly and getting ourselves into some interesting situations….I blame it on the heat! And we came across some road closures and had to follow the “deviation” signs which took us through some very narrow village roads. But we survived.
A rather slow start this morning, after thoroughly enjoying our peaceful spot overlooking the valley and the vines. Found a place not far from Arbois where we were able to do our “toilet ablutions” before taking a scenic drive up to Champagnola and back to Lons le Saunier. Pulled into a nice shady spot off the road a lunch break and continued on the D1083 before turning off at Saint Etienne du Bois. Thoroughly enjoyed the drive on the lesser road taking us up into the hills with a number of very tight corners and good climbs, passing a number of lakes and gorges. This is really pretty country.
Had found online a number of spots along the way that looked promising, but although they were okay, decided to look for something nicer. Finally came across this Aire overlooking the lake. Expected it to be full as it is a very popular place, but surprised that there were still several spots left. With temperatures once again over 30 degrees it was great to be beside the water, in the shade with a welcome breeze.
