Saturday July 30 Heckington Show

A welcome pint at the local.

Love it when you end up somewhere that you didn’t even know about, and thoroughly enjoy yourself.  Slow start this morning and got the map out to see where we would head for an outing, trying to cover areas we haven’t been too. Decided to head south west in the area of Burghley House where we went for the Proms just after we arrived, and have a look around the neighbouring area. We planned a route which would take us through some different roads and after about an hours drive, Heckington we saw sign posts for the Heckington village show.

Well what a surprised it was, as it turned out to be the biggest village show in England, rows and rows of cars parked in paddocks and we could see the tops of huge marquees. Ian estimated more than 20,000 people, it was huge. We had packed a picnic lunch which we had at the car before going in, but could see that for many people they had made it a full day out and had taken their chairs and picnic into the grounds and set up around the main arena. There were elderly people on their mobility scooters, babies in pushchairs and everyone seemed to have taken their dogs with them. There were all the sideshow rides and food as well as bars and country kitchens. And then marquees with the traditional baking, crafts and vegetable competitions. Lots of clothing stalls, found a good sunhat which I immediately put on. There were static displays of classic cars and even a traction engine running a sawmill, much to Ian’s delight.
The heavy horses were getting judged, and there was a dog show, but the highlights in the main arena were the Scurry Driving which we had never seen before, and a display put on by the Atkinson Action Horse Team. This company provides horses for many TV shows including Poldark and also for films. They do trick riding and their skill with the horses was just amazing. Loved watching the Spanish Stallions go through their paces, such beautiful animals.

All in all a real English country experience, and finished off the day with a walk to the village pub for a pint and dinner.

Loved this old guy working the traction engine.

Maybe we needed one of these for our Europe travels!!!

Yesterday we called into another local Car Boot sale, a weekly event held just down the road. These really seem so popular with row upon row of cars and so many stalls. Filled up my bag at the fruit and vege stand, so fresh, great quality and very reasonable - 5 nice red capsicums for one pound.

Loved these huge stuffed animals in a corner of the Carboot sale
A group had these barn owls on display at the car boot sale.

Looks and sounds like another wonderful English day Meg and love the old boys on the traction engine. The UK steam shows are great fun if you come across one.
