Sunset at White Sands National Monument

Really enjoyed our overnight stay at Rockhound State Park, such a great view from our camp this morning as the light came up. I still love seeing cactus growing in the wild, think I am becoming quite a fan of the desert!
Morning view at Rockhound

Went online this morning and booked our connecting flights from Tucson to Los Angeles now that we know where we are leaving from!!! Our LA – NZ flight had been booked back in April. Good to have that dealt to.
Continued east this morning to Las Cruces. As we have no idea what size towns are, we always check to see what the population is, saw that Las Cruces was 50,000. Needed to do some shopping for the “grandies” back home, so decided today was the day. Found our way around the town and the shops and ended up with quite a few exciting things to pack up in our bags.
The Organ Mountains
It was later in the afternoon before we got away and continued east, not quite sure where we would end up for the night.   The pass took us North of the Organ Mountains, a very spectacular range, before descending into the Tularosa Basin, quite a sight as it stretched for miles east to the Sacremento Mountains and home to the White Sand Missile Range. They had a museum there but it was too late in the afternoon to visit, so continued on to the White Sands National Monument. Thanks to Weiland from our camera club who mentioned that it was well worth a visit.
The sun was getting really low in the sky as we drove into the park, the dunes are brilliant white gypsum sand with a road meandering through. At the first place we could park I ran with the camera up into the dunes to try and catch the last of the sun…..felt like a “chook with its head cut off” as I didn’t really know where to go or what I would find! Surprised that the dunes were quite solid and much easier to walk on than I expected. It was fabulous and tried to make the most of the short time I had.
It was getting dark as we arrived into Alamogordo, found this RV park, the first we came too which is very clean and tidy and an ideal overnight stop.

No its not snow!!!!

The neighbours are getting into the Xmas spirit!

What a stunning landscape. I'll have to Google it because I know nothing about it.
