Yes, we are back in Montana again…can’t seem to get enough of this Big Sky Country! Actually we are taking the Scenic Routes South on a circuit that will hopefully bring us to Preston in South East Idaho by Friday. There is a night rodeo over the weekend and for the past trips we have been looking out for one that will tie in with where we are travelling, fingers crossed that we might be able to make it happen. Not quite sure of all the routes yet, but guess it will all evolve and will try and stay off the interstates where possible.

We left Salmon this morning and after following the river for some distance we climbed up to over 7000 feet and over Chief Joseph Pass, quite a drive as it wound up the mountains fairly steeply but no problems to Ruakiwi and the road was great.

Then it was over the other side and into Montana and big rangeland country as far as the eye could see. Huge ranches grazing beef on grass, great to see. It was hard to take photos that could portray the vastness of this area. We stopped at a lookout over the Big Hole basin and tried to do a panorama with about 7 shots, will see how it looks. We drove for several hours through this area and only passed a couple of very small towns.

Decided to have a shorter day after a few big ones and have stopped the night in the town of Dillon. Staying in a “proper” camp tonight with all facilities including cable TV, makes a change from all the dry camping we have been doing. Looks to be a interesting town to have a look around in the morning, but at the moment we are enjoying sitting outside under a tree with very pleasant temperatures in the mid 20’s…a real change from the last few days.
