July 1, Clearwater Stream, AK

130 Miles

A much quieter day today. Went back to the garage that fixed our tire yesterday and he had an old rim that “fitted” ours. He was happy to swap it with our misfit rim, so swapped the tires and we were all set….for our next flattie.
Collected a few fresh supplies, visited the information centre then continued on the Alaskan Highway. Tok was Mile 1315 on the highway, getting close to the end. Must admit it’s good to be back on roads that are sealed and well maintained. There were long straight stretches edged with trees and the snow capped Alaskan range rose up to our west.
Took a side road that we had read about, to an area that had been cleared of all trees and is either being used to grow a crop of quick ripening barley or for hay. It was amazing to see what could be grown once the trees were cleared, although the season is really short. Wondered why more of this is not being done.
Detoured 10 miles off the road to a small State Camp on the edge of a really nice spring fed stream – although more like a river. Got a great spot overlooking the crystal clear water. Had a good walk along the track that follows the stream, enjoyed getting out and stretching my legs. Hear the grayling fishing from the banks is quite good so Ian preparing to wander off after dinner for a fish.
…later…..he enjoyed trying but no luck!
