Monday September 19 – The Bergen Experience

Rather nice feature in the centre of Bergen

Today was a city day with a trip into Bergen by public transport. Caught a bus right outside the campground then a change to the City Light Rail to the centre of Bergen, a great train that comes about every 5 minutes, and in 45 minutes we were walking the city. Seems rather strange after the weeks in the north.
First stop was at an optician as have managed to break a nose pad off my glasses, can still wear them but they do feel a little unusual. They were very helpful but as they are titanium, they couldn’t be fixed. I could get new frames and have these lenses put in, but decided to see how I manage and might get it dealt to in Germany where things are a lot cheaper.
Had heard a lot about Bergen and seen photos of the wonderful old buildings which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The site on the edge of the harbour was first established in the 1100’s but over the years they have been rebuilt due to fires, and the oldest now were built in the 1700’s. We arrived with a cruise ship in port, lots of tour buses and guided walking tours everywhere. Somehow I felt a little “underwhelmed” by it all, the old buildings now house souvenir shops and restaurants and they feel a little too “contrived”. Interesting Conny and Gerhart had the same reaction and we all said how much more we enjoyed Trondheim and the old buildings there.  Noticed when I went through my photos that I hadn’t even taking one of the full row of houses!
We wandered around some of the back streets in this area and enjoyed them more, except passed an old rather neglected church and cemetery and noticed three street people huddled on the steps openly injecting. Not good.
It was time for some lunch so Ian and I headed back to a really nice café that we knew had great wifi. C & G had put us on to some excellent apps that enable you to find good Stellplatz’s (special areas that are designated for motorhomes and are quite cheap or often free) where ever you are. The coffee and food was great as well as very fast internet so got them all downloaded, and have now learnt how to use them with Conny’s help….even understanding some German words!
Decided to head into another part of the city and there we found another side of Bergen which we thoroughly enjoyed, some great buildings and architecture. Everywhere in the city construction is going on and many of the cobbled roads are being dug up, seems like they are laying new pipes or cabling. The weather was warm with a bit of sun which made it so pleasant to be out and about just wandering around.
Managed the return trip to camp with no problems, this has to be the best way to see cities when you have a motorhome, which Ian thoroughly enjoyed without worrying about parking etc.
Another great night with a shared dinner, I made a chilli con carne to go with an excellent vegetable dish of Conny’s. They are probably taking a different route than us tomorrow, it has been a fun time with lots of laughs and will miss their company, but will visit them in Dusseldorf towards the end of our trip.
Lots of city photos today, impressions of the city, taken with my little Sony
