Monday September 6, Willow Campground, Near Mt Ranier, WA

It seems like New Zealand has hit the world headlines with the earthquake although perhaps not in the best light….read in the Seattle Times today ..”Army has taken over the centre of Christchurch”, makes us sound a bit third world.
Last day of the holiday weekend for Americans and the weather is still really good, sunny with temps in the low 20’s. Everyone is out and about enjoying themselves.

Had a leisurely look around Ellensburg, such a shame most of the shops were shut though. Lots of old brick buildings in the downtown area have been preserved and look great.
Took the scenic canyon route towards Yakima which followed the Yakima River, a great drive and had a lunch stop beside the river.

Picked up fresh peaches and apples from one of the many roadside stalls dotting this fruit growing area. Reminded us lots of Hawkes Bay, especially with the very dry hills surrounding the valleys.

The traffic had really built up this afternoon and we were surprised how busy HW12 was heading through the mountains. Decided that it was such a nice drive we would stop early and do the rest of the trip tomorrow once the holiday makers were off the road.

Have a great little spot in a Forest Campground, right beside the swiftly flowing Tieton River, waving out to

That region reminded me alot of Central Otago really.........the gorge in particular.
Glad you are backon the road.how is Ian? Have you taken up some of the driving??
I hadn't heard the army had taken over the centre of CHCH.... they were called in to help with road control and moving bricks and mortar....... more after shocks again last night. Poor devils.
NZ is mostly cold and gloomy weather wise too.......... don't hurry home.Spring is on its way!

Funny, the army have barely been mentioned in NZ media, bar keeping some areas secure. I don't envy them down south coping with 200+ aftershocks.
