Sunday July 31, Massacre Rock State Park, ID

Great thumbs up for this place Terry and Sherry, just wonderful, have a site overlooking the Snake River as it winds through a bit of a gorge….but more later.

We don’t like driving on the Interstates and Freeways, firstly Ian doesn’t enjoy all the traffic, and also I can’t stop to take photos! So we worked out a route east that took us on some great roads, which at time even dropped down into Utah. A really interesting slice of rural Idaho that took us through dairy farms, ranches and cropping lands as well as vast miles of sage covered desert land.

We realised we were in a Mormon region being so close to Salt Lake City, and this morning there seemed to hardly be a car on the road, the many churches had very full car parks, and towns were all closed including supermarkets and many eating places.

The weather has been really pleasant today, in the low 20’s, and the skies quite cloudy with a bit of rain. We didn’t complain, seemed to have had nothing but blue skies and high temps for several weeks.

We finally had to join the freeway to get to Massacre Rock State Park though, but well worth it as this really is a great place, with huge rocky outcrops and the Snake River swirling through. Were very lucky to get a campsite with a great view as well, and decided that we will stay here for two nights, a really good place to relax.

I took my camera and went for a wander along some of the trails and ended up on a rocky area overlooking the river, just spectacular scenery. It has been much more interesting today taking landscape photos with the cloud cover, after several weeks of clear blue sky.

Kiaora, enjoying your travels second hand, have your blog and google maps open and keep swapping between to follow locations. The amount of green circles through irigation in this area is impressive. All well in our part of NZ, with the $NZ being so strong against $US you should consider buying a RAM ute to bring home. Love Ed.

Oh Ed.....he does drool over them. Not sure if he can fit one in his bag though! Have really enjoyed the diversity of Idaho, and the irrigation is pretty imressive!
