Wednesday September 8, Westport, WA

100 Miles

We are at the fishing port of Westport tonight, out on the West Coast and have found a great little campground where we are parked 5 metres from the boat harbour with a panoramic view from our “lounge”. There is plenty of action as it is a working port, and on the other side of the road is the coast with surfers riding some pretty small waves.
The road on the other side of town is lined with shops and cafes, plenty to explore in the morning. A sea mist has come in so everything is a little misty, had hopes of a good west coast sunset but no joy. But just wonderful to be here.
Maybe it has been the weeks driving in the wilderness up North with the lack of shopping opportunities, as this morning passed an Outlet shopping centre in Centralia that just needed to be checked out! Needless to say there were a few extra parcels. A few concerns as to how our luggage allowance will be on the flight home.
Some morning rain in town and the whole day has been quite grey. We took a quieter route out to the coast from Chehalis, through many small rural areas and little towns, not looking overly prosperous. This has been a big forestry area but as we have found everywhere we have been, many of the mills have closed down, although passed a number of logging trucks on the road.
The little beach towns look as though they have been around for a long time, quaint old beach cottages with all the local decorations…..driftwood and buoys. It doesn’t appear as though the big money has arrived in this area though as didn’t see many signs of new developments or rebuilding of houses.

Hi Meg and Ian
I can assure that the army has not taken over Chch, just helping out police with making sure people don't get hurt by going into areas they shouldn't be in. Thankfully the aftershocks are now calming down, nothing above 4.0 for a couple of days now :-)
Mum and Dad got to San Fran okay and have posted a couple of photos and some info on her blog.
Safe travels.
